Review

This review applies to version 5.0 The latest version of this software will soon be reviewed by our informers.

Nuance PDF Converter 5 is a useful tool for converting PDF to formatted documents and all the way around.

Beside all the features supplied by previous versions of this Nuance/Scansoft PDF Converter, version 5 includes interesting new features:

The application is able to merge comments from the user and make PDF documents comparison.

It is able to convert entire Microsoft Outlook email folders to PDF document, including attachments to save disk space.

Now this version can convert PDF documents to all the exact Microsoft Office 2007 formats including PowerPoint, XPS (input and output), etc. and with the Windows Vista presentations look. ISO/PDF support.

The application can create PDF packages and split PDF files, always without the need of the native Acrobat programs.

Faster launch, PDF documents creation and printing speeds.

Watermarks, signatures and stamps can now be created and added, with optional transparency settings.

Measurement tools for distance, perimeter and area are now available for on-screen measuring. When the PDF contains a scale drawing, user can enter its scaling and these new tools will show the distances or areas represented in the drawing. 3D objects can now be rotated, zoomed, etc. to get all the prespective views.

Text-to-Speech is accomplished by Nuance RealSpeak Solo that offers up to nine languages (previous versions included just one). Text-to-Speech will read aloud paragraphs one by one, not only by the page.

Movie and audio files can now be embeded in PDF documents and set the way they are going to be played.

User can also apply tags to different and individual objects of the document
Advantages
  • Fast conversion, movie and sound, Vista look, etc.
Disadvantages
  • Publishers don't offer a trial version for the standard PDF Converter 5, but for the Professional version.

Pros: NONE WITH NUANCE

Cons: Was a big supporter/user of Scansoft's PaperPort Products, then PP sold out/changed to Nuance. Recently bought PDF Converter Pro 5.0. Terrible software, NO Support, Surprised they don't charge to view their Home Page. Avoid Nuance products at all costs!

Summary: No Support! Bought PDF Converter Pro 5.0 for advertsied email package archiving only to find it doesn't work. Nuance Customer support is non-existant (unless you want to pay more $$). Worst I have ever seen, too bad, (previous company ScanSoft) was a class act. Not a cheap test product, prepare to get burned once Nuance has your $$!
